Find below recommendations to understand the individual responsibilities of Architects, Structural engineers and Project managers with regard to shop drawings services and field coordination.

In Design Document phase:
  1. The Architect or Engineer must provide specific details on his drawings to enable complete and detailed production of shop drawings.
  2. The Architect or Engineer must provide with the bidding documents, reflected ceiling plans showing required location of lighting, fixtures, amenities, etc.
  3. Areas of possible errors must be reviewed by the Architect or Engineer during design.
In Construction phase:

Contractor's Responsibility:
  • The Contractor is responsible for checking all shop drawings as they relate to coordination and adherence to the contract documents.
  • After checking the shop drawings thoroughly the contractor must provide in writing his approval for adherence to the contract documents.
  • He should submit shop drawings to the Architect or Engineer for checking as soon as possible.
Architect or Engineer’s Responsibility:
  • An Architect or Engineer should thoroughly check Shop drawings submitted to them for design and compliance with design specifications
  • The Architect or Engineer must return shop drawings to the Contractor as soon as possible. He/she should clearly indicate the changes on at least three sets of shop drawings.
  • He/she should maintain a log showing the date shop drawings are received, the action taken, date approved or returned for correction, and other relevant data. This log should be available to all stake holders of the project.
This process should be discussed at the initial design phase and any problems arising should be resolved at subsequent project phases.
